Why I Don’t Like New Year’s Resolutions (But I Love Goals and Dreams)

Why I Don’t Like New Year’s Resolutions (But I Love Goals and Dreams)

Every January, the same cycle begins: New Year’s resolutions pop up everywhere, and we feel the pressure to “fix” ourselves. Whether it’s losing weight, exercising daily, or being more organized, resolutions often feel like a list of everything we think we’re doing wrong.

And honestly? I’m not a fan.

As someone who loves personal growth, I understand the appeal of wanting a fresh start. But here’s the thing about resolutions: they’re often rooted in guilt, shame, or a sense of “not being enough.” They set us up with rigid rules and leave little room for real life—which, let’s face it, is always messy and unpredictable.

So, while I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions, I’m passionate about setting meaningful goals and working toward my dreams in a way that feels aligned, flexible, and, most importantly, joyful.

Here’s why that shift makes all the difference—and how you can approach 2025 with intention instead of pressure.

The Problem with Resolutions

Resolutions sound great in theory, but they often fail because:

  1. They Focus on Perfection
    • Resolutions are often framed as all-or-nothing commitments. Miss a workout? Eat dessert? Suddenly, you feel like you’ve failed.
  2. They Don’t Connect to Your ‘Why’
    • Many resolutions are surface-level. “Lose weight” might be the resolution, but what you really want is to feel more energetic or confident. Without a deeper connection, it’s easy to lose motivation.
  3. They Add More Pressure
    • Let’s be real—life is already overwhelming. Adding a resolution to your packed to-do list can feel like just one more thing you’re not doing “right.”

Why Goals and Dreams Are Different

Instead of rigid resolutions, I love setting goals and dreaming big. Here’s why:

  1. Goals Are Flexible
    • Unlike resolutions, goals allow for progress, not perfection. You can adjust them as life changes without feeling like you’ve failed.
  2. Dreams Inspire You
    • Dreams are about more than tasks—they’re about creating a life that excites you. Whether it’s feeling calmer, prioritizing your health, or pursuing a passion, dreams give you a reason to keep moving forward.
  3. They’re Rooted in Your Values
    • When you set goals that align with what truly matters to you, they feel less like chores and more like self-care.

How to Shift from Resolutions to Intentions

If you’re ready to leave resolutions behind and approach 2025 with more ease and purpose, here’s how to get started:

  1. Reflect Before You Plan
    • Take a moment to think about 2024. What went well? What challenged you? What do you want to carry forward into the new year?
  2. Focus on How You Want to Feel
    • Instead of “I need to do XYZ,” ask yourself: How do I want to feel in 2025? Maybe it’s more balanced, energized, or peaceful.
  3. Set Aligned Goals
    • Once you know how you want to feel, think about small steps that can help you get there. If you want to feel calm, maybe that’s 10 minutes of yoga in the morning. If you want to feel energized, it might be adding movement or breathwork to your day.
  4. Dream Big (But Start Small)
    • Think about one or two things you’d love to accomplish in 2025. Then, break them into tiny, manageable steps. Progress is what counts—not perfection.
